Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh is in the dock after a letter linked to the Bhima Koregaon case contained a phone number that allegedly belonged to him.

digvijay singh role ends in TelanganaNew Delhi: After he came under the police lens in connection with the Maoist plot, senior Congress
leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh
and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to act against him. The senior Congress leader reacted
after the Pune Police added to the chargesheet, filed against 10 activists for alleged Maoist links in
connection with the Elgar Parishad, a letter containing a phone number that allegedly belonged to
Singh.

“The phone number they are mentioning is available to everyone via Rajya Sabha’s portal. I haven’t used
it over the last four years. If I am involved in any kind of anti-national activities, then Modi ji,
Rajnath ji & Fadnavis ji you are free to show courage and take any action against me,” Singh said, as
per news agency ANI.

Digvijaya Singh’s clarification came even as Pune Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Suhas Bavche
said in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case: “On the basis of probe, some letters were recovered.
In those letters, a few mobile numbers have been found, we’re investigating.”

The letter attached to the chargesheet filed in the Bhima Koregaon case was recovered by the Pune
Police during raids conducted across the country. The 10 activists were arrested following these raids.

The Pune Police had filed the chargesheet against five activists recently, against Surendra Gadling,
Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson and Sudhir Dhavale. The five were arrested by the police in June.

The purported letter, dated September 25, 2017, was written to Surendra (who police claim is Surendra
Gadling) by one comrade Prakash.

The letter reads, “We must intensify nationwide protests using students. State forces will be soft
against students which will gradually put the state at a disadvantage while acting against us. Congress
leaders are very much willing to assist in this process and have also agreed to fund further
agitations…. In this regard, you can contact our friend at (the phone number of Digvijaya Singh as
per police).”

According to police, the phone number can also be found on the website of the Indian National Congress.

Upon being asked whether the Congress leader would be called for questioning, Pune Police DCP Bavche
said they were investigating the letters and the numbers mentioned in them.

“If someone’s role is established, whatever is needed to be done as part of the investigation, will be
done,” Bavche said.

In September also, Digvijaya Singh had refuted the allegations and challenged the government to arrest
him. “If I am guilty, I challenge the Centre and the state government to arrest me,” he had said.

The other activists in the case are Telugu poet Varavar Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha
Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha. While the first four have been arrested, Navlakha has been booked but
not arrested.
